Lower back pain is a common concern that affects 90% of people at some point in their lifetime, with more than 50% experiencing more than one episode. While this is not a specific disease, rather, a symptom may occur from a variety of different processes. If you have chronic back pain, one type of treatment by itself will not always stop your pain. Some of the treatments for back pain being offered today include acupuncture, biofeedback, cognitive behavioral therapy, chiropractic, massage, or a comprehensive rehabilitation program.

TENS

Many doctors recommend TENS in their offices to help their patients with pain associated with arthritis, headaches, muscle strains, TMI disorder, and most especially back pain. TENS is an acronym for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator where a small electronic device delivers current through electrodes placed on the skin. This is a Food and Drug Administration-approved for home use and it does not require prescription.

The electric current from the TENS unit confuses the brain and blocks pain signals from getting through. This also stimulates the production of the body’s natural morphine-like substance, the endorphins. The TENS unit for back pain are non-addictive and drug free, which is something that narcotics cannot match and is completely safe when used as directed.
