Surgery or Supplements? How to Properly Care for a Back Injury

If there is one injury that can slow you down, it’s a back injury. Whether it’s a sprain, strain, or broken bones, these injuries can vary in regards to treatment. While some injuries may require only rest and anti-inflammatory medication, others that are more serious require a trip to a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment. To learn the best options you have available to care for your back injury, here are some treatments to help you get rid of the pain.

A Warm Bath

If you have muscle spasms or even a broken tailbone, taking a warm bath can be a viable treatment option. Whether in a regular bath tub or a hot tub that has whirlpool capabilities, spending 20-30 minutes in a tub of warm water three or four times per day can bring relief.

Supplements

For many people who prefer natural treatments over prescription drugs, various types of supplements are popular choices. One of the most used supplements to relieve back pain is glucosamine, which has been shown to help with joint pain. Able to ease pain and provide better movement, it can be combined with aspirin if needed to provide added relief. However, be prepared to have patience, since treatment with supplements can take months to show results.

Visit an Orthopedist

If you’ve had a back pain accident that involves broken vertebrae or severe sprains and strains, it’s best to visit an orthopedist as soon as possible. Since they specialize in back injuries, they can perform such tests as an MRI or CAT scan to gain a better understanding of the problem. If the injury is serious enough, surgery is an option, although it’s often a last resort after medication and physical therapy. However, if surgery is needed, most orthopedic surgeons use arthroscopic methods, which are minimally-invasive procedures that let patients heal up much quicker.

If your injuries are not severe, moderate exercise is often prescribed by doctors to help patients overcome their pain. Light aerobics, swimming, yoga, and walking are considered some of the most effective exercises for treating back pain. For example, walking for 10 minutes three times per day to start with can help heal your back, as can swimming or water aerobics done for 15-30 minutes several times per week.

By paying careful attention to your body and how your back feels after being injured, you’ll be able to visit an orthopedist and get the proper treatment plan for your needs.
